Biography

  Ewa Kowalski is a Polish-born flautist acclaimed for her expressive artistry and dynamic performances. She studied under the esteemed Professor Jerzy Mrozik at the Karol Lipiński Conservatorium of Music in Wrocław, Poland, where she earned her Master of Music in Performance. Ewa is a first-prize winner of both the International Woodwind and Brass Competition (Wrocław) and the National Flute Competition (Olsztyn)  and has placed in numerous other national and international competitions. She was awarded the prestigious Young Musician Scholarship by the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage, as well as a full scholarship to William Bennett’s International Flute Summer School in England, where she further   refined her chamber music skills.

Since relocating to Australia, Ewa has built a vibrant performance career. She has appeared as a soloist at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney and the PolArt Classical Music Festival, and was a finalist in the Sydney Flute Festival Open Flute Competition. Ewa has performed with the Wind Energy Ensemble, Sydney Contemporary Orchestra  and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, among others.

She is a founding member of the Hourglass Ensemble, performing regularly across Australia and internationally, with appearances in Poland, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Her notable Australian engagements include performances at the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre, and City Recital Hall. She has been featured on Fine Music FM and premiered the flute concerto Everything I Touch by Margery Smith at the Sydney Opera House,  in  2019.

Ewa has performed as a guest artist at the Australian Flute Festival (2019 and 2023) and served as an adjudicator for the 2023 Young Artist Competition. In 2025, she released her debut flute and piano album Her Journey, showcasing works by women composers. That same year, she appeared twice at the Newcastle Music Festival with the Hourglass Ensemble and soprano Bronwyn Douglas.

Ewa performs on a 9K Gold Muramatsu flute with Tsubasa headjoint, an Elite Deluxe Burkart piccolo with Mancke headjoint, and a Miyazawa ST Model alto flute.
